Career path of the Pump Man in Merchant Navy :
(1) 10th passed students with at least 40 % can apply for GP rating course.
(2) Then the student gets placed onboard the ship as an Ordinary Seaman.
(3) After getting appropriate experience, the Ordinary Seaman becomes the Able Bodied Seaman.
(4) The Able Bodied Seaman needs to get a considerable amount of experience in cargo operations.
(5) After doing courses related to cargo handling and pump operations, the Able Bodied Seaman gets promoted to the Pump Man of the ship.
Duties and Responsibilities of a Pump Man on a ship :
(1) Pump Man rank is only present on tankers.
(2) The pump man is responsible for assisting the Chief Officer in cargo operations.
(3) He is also responsible for operating the cargo pumps and routine maintenance of the cargo pumps.
(4) If there is any problem with the cargo pumps, the pump man assists the Second Engineer with maintenance of the same.
Salary of the Pump Man in Merchant Navy :
(1) Salary of Ordinary Seaman – USD 400 – USD 800.
(2) Salary of Able Bodied Seaman -USD 800 – USD 1500.
(3) Salary of the Pump Man – USD 1200 – USD 2500.
(4) All the above ranks mentioned above also get the additional overtime allowances per month.
