Eligibility criteria for becoming deck officers in merchant navy :
(1) The candidate should have passed 12th exam with physics, mathematics and chemistry as his main subjects.
(2) The age of the candidate should be between 17 to 25 years.
(3) The candidate should have a good eyesight.
(4) Colourblind candidates are not allowed.
(5) The candidate should be mentally and physically fit.

Career path for deck officers in merchant navy :
(1) After passing 12th if the candidate wants to become a deck officer in merchant navy then he has two options.
(2) He can go for a one year diploma course in nautical science or can opt for a three year degree course like B. Sc in nautical science.
(3) If the candidate opt for a diploma course in nautical science then he additionally has to do 18 months as a deck cadet onboard ship, before becoming eligible for the next exam.
(4) If the candidate opt for a B. Sc course in nautical science then he additionally has to do 12 months as a deck cadet onboard ship, before becoming eligible for the next exam.
(5) After this the deck cadet can apply for the second mate’s certificate of competency exam.
(6) After passing the exam, the deck cadet can be promoted to additional third officer rank.
(7) With appropriate experience, he gets promoted further as a third officer and second officer.
(8) After completion of the 18 months sea time, the third officer or second officer can also apply for a chief mate’s certificate of competency exam.
(9) After appropriate experience the second mate gets promoted to the chief officer rank.
(10) After completion of about 36 months after second mates COC or 30 months after second mate’s COC with 12 months as a chief officer, the candidate can apply for master’s COC exam.
(11) After appropriate experience the chief officer gets promoted to the Captain or Master rank.

(1) Deck Cadet – USD 300 – USD 600
(2) Additional third officer – USD 1000 – USD 2400
(3) Third Officer – USD 2400 – USD 3800
(4) Second officer- USD 3000 – USD 4800
(5) Chief Officer – USD 5000 – USD 12000
(6) Captain – USD 8000 – USD 13000
