Eligibility Criteria for becoming a Bosun on a ship :

(1) The candidate should have passed 10th with minimum 40 percentages.

(2) The candidate should be mentally and physically stable.

Career path for becoming a Bosun in Merchant Navy :

(1) A 10th pass student can do a 6 month GP rating course to join a ship as an Ordinary Seaman.

(2) The Ordinary Seaman gets promoted to the Able Bodied Seaman, after gaining appropriate experience.

(3) The Able Bodied Seaman after gaining considerable rank experience can get a certificate of competency in deck jobs and seamanship from the DG shipping.

(5) And then the AB gets promoted to the Bosun of the ship.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Bosun of a ship :

(1) The Bosun is the in charge of the deck crew.

(2) The Bosun acts as a coordinator between Chief Officer and the deck crew.

(3) The Chief Officer discusses the work plan with the Bosun in the morning and the Bosun gets the work done from the ship’s crew throughout the day.

(4) The Bosun assists the Chief Officer in port arrival, port departure and port preparations.

(5) The Bosun normally is a day worker, he do not keep bridge watches.

(6) The Captain can ask the Bosun to keep the bridge watch, if required.

Salary of the Bosun in Merchant Navy :

(3) Salary of the Bosun – USD 1200 – USD 2500.
