(1) Satellite Phones :
Seafarers can contact with their families by using the satellite phones provided on the ship.
Though this type of communication is costly, it is an effective means of communication.
Satellite phones also do not work in some areas but 90 % of times they do their job perfectly.
Satellite phones provide seamless service at the sea almost every time.
(2) Global SIM cards :
Seafarers can buy the global SIM cards, which keeps them connected with their loved ones from any corner of the world.
Global SIM card companies tie up with the mobile operator companies from all over the world to provide seamless network to the customers.
The only downside of the global SIM cards is that they work only at the ports and not at the sea.
(3) Internet :
Nowadays almost all the ships are equipped with the Internet facilities.
By using Internet calling apps like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Skype Messenger, IMO calling app, the seafarer stays connected with the family all the time.
The Internet is available onboard either free or at a very minimal cost.
This is the most preferred method of communication for all the seafarers.

(4) Mail for crew systems :
Earlier when Internet was not there on the ships, the mail for crews systems were installed on the ships.
In this method of communication, every seafarer used to get a account in the mail for crew system.
From that account the seafarer could send limited mails to the family through the Captain.
Means every mail to and from the family used to go through the Captain.
This type of communication was not private.
Now this system has almost become absolute from the ships.
(5) Local SIM cards :
The seafarers can also by Local SIM cards at the ports the ship is visiting to.
These SIM cards are provided to the seafarers onboard the ship by the agents.
If the ship is staying at any particular port for more days then this is a very good method of communication for the seafarers with their families.
These are the methods seafarers use to stay connected with their loved ones from the ship.
