How do the ships adjust the time onboard during long voyages ?

In this post we will discuss about how do the ships adjust the time onboard during long voyages and information regarding advance and retard in detail.

The merchant navy vessel transports the cargo all over the world.

While doing this, they go on long voyages. Long voyages means the ship has to sail through different time zones.

For adjusting to these different time zones, the Master of the ship has to do the advance and retard in timings of the ship on numerous occasions.

When to do the advance and retard is the decision of the master of the ship.

The only thing he needs to keep in mind, is that the timing of the ship is same as per the port to which the ship is calling.

Some captains do the advance in the day time while they do the retard in the night time.

While some captains keep it simple.

They do both the advance and retard during the night time mostly at 12 o’clock in the midnight.

Adjusting the time onboard ship during long voyages :

The advance and retard works as per the time zone in which the ship is sailing.

If the timing of the ship is behind the nearby country then the ship performs the advance.

While if it is ahead of the nearby country then the ship does the retard.

Advance means at midnight 00:00 hrs the timing is adjusted to 01:00 hrs.

Retard means at midnight 01:00 hrs the timing is adjusted back to 00:00 hrs.

This advance and retard procedure is important for keeping the timing up to date on the ship.
