Which are the Saturday routines :
The Saturday routines are the weekly testing of the various important machinery alarms onboard ship. It includes the following things –
(1) Testing of the bilge alarms in the engine room, pump room and steering gear room.
(2) Testing of fire alarms on the ship.
(3) Testing of Main engine fuel oil leak alarm.
(4) Testing of generator engine fuel oil leak alarm.
(5) Testing of Engine room blower flaps and funnel flaps.
(6) Starting of the emergency generator engine – Battery start & Hydraulic start.
(7) Starting of the lifeboat engines.
(8) Trying out of the emergency fire pump.
(9) Testing of the OWS alarms.
(10) Testing of the ODME alarms.
All the alarms listed above are tested on weekly basis. In addition to this some alarms are also tested every monthly and every three monthly, they are not discussed here.

Who carries out the Saturday routines :
(1) Testing of the fire alarms is the responsibility of the Electro Technical Officer.
(2) Second Engineer and ETO are responsible for testing of the Main engine alarms, OWS alarms and trying out of the emergency generator.
(3) Third Engineer tries out the lifeboat engines and for the testing of auxiliary engine fuel oil leak alarm.
(4) Fourth Engineer checks the Bilge alarms in the engine room and steering gear room.
(5) Chief Officer and ETO are responsible for pump room alarms and ODME alarms.
(6) Pump man tries out the bilge alarms in the pump room.

Saturday routines involves the testing of the important machinery alarms every week.
This ensures the safety of the ship in case of any mishap.
Weekly testing of the alarms make sure that all the important alarms are always in working condition and will give the timely warning of any malfunction in the ship.
