Who prepares the food on ships :
The Galley department prepares the food for all the ship staff.
Galley department includes Chief Cook and the General Steward.
The crew of the Galley department do the most difficult job on the ship that to prepare food which will please and satisfy everyone.
They prepare the food thrice a day – Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.
The Galley department crew do not have any holiday. They keep doing their job continuously.
What type of food is prepared onboard ship :
The nationality of the crew decides the type of food menu of the ship.
Filipino crew means, the Chief Cook will prepare Filipino cuisine.
Indian crew means Indian cuisine.
On some ships, if Officers are Indians and crew is Filipino then Indian food and Filipino food both will be available.
On these types of ships normally two general stewards are present, one for Officers and the other for the crew.
How do the ship manage food stock for long voyages :
(1) Maintaining ration and provisions for long voyages is a challenge for chief cook and captain.
(2) As per the voyage order, the captain asks the chief cook to take the inventory of the food items.
(3) Chief Cook checks everything and tells it to the Captain.
(4) As per the duration of the voyage, they both prepare a list of items sufficient to last till the next convenient port.
(5) Then they prepare the purchase order for all the food items.
(6) At the convenient port, the shipping company supplies all the food items as per the purchase order.
Where do the seafarers store the food items ?
(1) Upon receiving all the required food items, the Chief Cook with the help of the ship’s crew keeps the food items appropriately.
(2) In meat room, ship staff stores meat, chicken, beef and pork at -18 degree centigrade.
(3) The fish room stores all the types of fishes at-18 degrees.
(5) The vegetable room stores all the vegetables and dairy products at 5 degree centigrade.
(6) Rest other items are stored outside the cold storage.
(7) Chief Cook uses these food items as per the requirement.
