What is a Passport ?
(1) The seafarer’s birth country issues the passport to him then only the seafarer can travel outside the country.
(2) It is a must have document for travelling from one country to another country.
(3) A passport records all the travel history of the seafarer that helps while calculating the sea time.
(4) Passport also stores all the travel visa’s obtained by the seafarer.
(5) The validity of the passport is for 10 years.
What is Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC) :
(1) The Director General of Shipping issues a travel document to the seafarers which is Continuous Discharge Certificate or CDC.
(2) The validity of the CDC is also for 10 years.
(3) A continuous discharge certificate or CDC stores all details of the ships sailed by the seafarer.
(4) This information is checked by MMD while doing document verification of the seafarers.
Pre Sea Training Certificate :
(1) A pre sea training institute issues this certificate to the seafarer after the seafarer completes the training successfully.
(2) The pre sea training courses include marine engineering, diploma in nautical science, B.Sc in nautical science, Graduate marine engineering course, ETO course and GP rating course.
(3) Finally after successfully completing the above mentioned courses the respective training institute issues a pre sea training certificate to the seafarer.
Basic STCW course certificates :
Four basic STCW course certificates are –
(1) Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF) course certificate
(2) Personal Survival Techniques (PST) course certificate
(3) Elementary First Aid (EFA) course certificate
(4) Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR) course certificate.
Other important travel documents required for joining merchant navy :
(1) Job Contract letter.
(2) Guarantee letter.
(3) Valid medical certificate.
(3) Plane tickets.
All the above mentioned documents and travel tickets are provided by the shipping company at the time of joining a ship.
A DG certified doctor conducts the medical examination. The shipping company pays all the expenses of the medical examination.
