What is Merchant Navy ?
Merchant Navy deals with the transport of the goods and various important items from one country to another country with the help of the ships.
Various goods like rice, coal, crude oil, naphtha, LPG, LNG are transported on the ships.
There are different types of ships to carry different types of cargo.
The different types of ships in merchant navy are bulk carriers, car carriers, oil tankers, chemical tankers, gas tankers etc.
Departments in Merchant Navy :
There are three main departments on a ship. They are,
(1) Deck Department
(2) Engine Department
(3) Galley Department.
Eligibility Criteria for working on a ship :
(1) A 10th pass candidate can also join merchant navy.
(2) A 12th pass candidate can also work on a ship.
(3) A mechanical engineering graduate can also join merchant navy.
(4) A electrical engineer can also join the merchant navy.
(5) Graduate in any field can also work on a ship.
(6) Age limit for joining a ship is 17.5 years to 25 years.
(7) The candidate should be mentally and physically stable.
(8) The candidate should have a good eyesight.
(9) The candidate should not be colourblind or night blind.
(10) Candidate should clear the IMUCET entrance test if he wants to be an officer in shipping.
How can a 10th pass student join Merchant Navy :
(1) A 10th pass student with at least 40 % of marks can work on a ship by doing a General Purpose Rating course.
(2) By doing this course one can serve on a ship as an Oiler, Fitter, Pump Man or Bosun.
How can a 12th pass student join Merchant Navy :
(1) A 12th pass candidate can join the merchant navy as a Deck Officer or as a Marine Engineer.
(2) For joining a ship as a Deck Officer one can do a 1 year diploma course in nautical science or a 3 year Bachelor’s degree course in nautical science.
(3) For joining a ship as a Marine Engineer one can do a 4 year marine engineering course.
(4) A mechanical engineer can also join merchant navy by doing a 1 year Graduate Marine Engineer course.
How can a graduate of any field work on a ship :
(1) A graduate in the culinary field can work on a ship by obtaining a ship’s cook certificate from DG Shipping.
(2) A graduate from any other field can also be able to work on a ship by doing a General Purpose Rating course or by doing a one year diploma course in nautical science.

(1) Salary of the Deck Officers – USD 400 – USD 13000.
