Eligibility Criteria for becoming an Oiler in Merchant Navy :
(1) The candidate should be 10th pass with minimum 40%.
(2) The candidate should be between 17.5 to 25 years of age.
(3) The candidate should be physically and mentally fit.
(4) The candidate should have a healthy eyesight.

Career path for becoming an Oiler :
(1) The 10th pass candidate, needs to do a GP rating course to be able to become an oiler in merchant navy.
(2) After completing this course the candidate join the ship as a Wiper.
(3) With appropriate experience, the wiper gets promoted to the Oiler.
(4) The Wiper as well as Oiler can also become a Marine Engineer by applying for MEO Class 4 exam.
(5) They can do that after the completion of 36 months of sea time.
(6) The Oiler and Wiper are responsible for the general cleanliness of the engine room of the ship.
(7) The Oiler also keeps the engine room watches with the assigned Marine Engineer.
Salary of the Oiler in Merchant Navy :
(1) Salary of Wiper – USD 300 – USD 800.
(2) Salary of Oiler – USD 800 – USD 1500.
The above mentioned salary is a fixed salary but Wiper and Oiler also get the additional overtime per month.
