Eligibility Criteria for Marine Engineering :
(1) For becoming a Marine Engineer in Merchant Navy, one need to have more than 60 % marks in physics, Chemistry and mathematics in 12th standard.
(2) One should also have at least 60 % in English language in either 10th board or 12th board, if he wants apply for Marine engineering.
(3) The age limit for Marine engineering is 20 to 25 years.
(4) The candidate should have a good eyesight.
(5) The candidate should be mentally and physically fit.
(6) The candidate should not be colourblind.

Marine Engineering course :
The B. Tech marine engineering course is a four year engineering course which can be pursued after 12th standard.
A mechanical engineer can also become a marine engineer by doing a one year graduate marine engineering course.
Career path for Marine Engineers :
A freshly passed candidate joins onboard ship as a Trainee Marine Engineer or TME.
The government requirement for this training period is 6 months but some companies may ask you to complete 18 months.
After completion of the training period the marine can apply for class 4 exam.
After clearing the MEO Class 4 exam, the TME can be promoted to fourth engineer.
The fourth engineer after the experience of about 12 to 18 months can be promoted to third engineer.
The fourth engineer or third engineer after the experience of 12 months can apply for a MEO Class 2 exam.
After clearing the MEO Class 2 exam and after a considerable amount of experience the company can promote the third engineer to the second engineer.
The second engineer after the experience of about 12 months as second engineer can apply for a MEO Class 1 exam.
After passing the MEO Class 1 exam and after gaining appropriate experience the company will promote the second engineer to chief engineer.

The salary of marine engineers is as follows –
TME – USD 400 to USD 600
Assistant Fourth Engineer – USD 1000 to USD 2000
Fourth Engineer – USD 2000 to USD 4000
Third Engineer – USD 3000 to USD 5000
Assistant Second Engineer – USD 5000 to USD 8000
Second Engineer – USD 7000 to USD 10000
Chief Engineer – USD 7000 to USD 12000
